Great Processes Require Great Equipment

Great Processes Require Great Equipment

Eck Plastics is always looking for ways to improve our processes and make better parts for our customers. When we came across the Keyence VL-700 Series 3D Scanner CMM, we saw the potential for us to add another industry-leading piece of technology to create the best parts possible.

Keyence is known as a leader in measurement technology and this new VL-700 carries that tradition forward as the first 3D scanner capable of producing a STEP file. According to Eck Sales Manager, Sean Reardon, “This scanner can convert a physical object, regardless of material, to a CAD model in minutes. High-speed 3D scanning allows instantaneous, non-contact, accurate measurement of 3D shapes for plastic molded products.”

Old methods of 3D measurement were difficult, especially with complex pieces. Parts had to be aligned precisely and painstakingly measured in great detail. Those measurements had to be converted into a graphic model using different software before the model was ready for CAD development. With the VL-700, simply place the object on the stage, press a button, and in a few minutes the machine produces a 3D model with precise measurements of the entire surface area, ready for CAD development.

Eck President, Brett Pennifeather called the VL-700, “A revolutionary piece of technology that offers a lot of advantages for our customers.”

Because the scanner measures the entire surface of the object, it is possible to identify all defect locations on the target and to perform profile measurements at any desired spot on the part. Scans from the VL-700 are viewable in an easy-to-understand 3D color map allowing us to easily enact countermeasures for problems such as warpage, waviness, strain, and short shot. We can also easily compare and analyze multiple sets of measurement data to ensure accuracy and precision.

The Keyence website states, “Scan data can be superimposed on a CAD model, or other scan data, for easy color-visualization of the differences in shape. Cross-sectional measurements can also be performed to compare dimensional differences.” Using scan data it’s easy to compare produced parts against their CAD models or scans of multiple parts against one another to find and correct inaccuracies or defects in manufacturing.

Adding the VL-700 is another example of our commitment to making the best plastic parts possible. When you come to Eck Plastics for a part, rest assured we have the means to provide the most accurate and easily analyzed data available. Our process includes the most state-of-the-art technology in the world because we want our customers to have the best parts in the world.
